History: Acquisition of zone by U.S. [United States] provided for in Hay-Herran Treaty with Colombia (not ratified by Colombia); rights over it granted to U.S. by treaty with Panama in 1903; governed and operated according to an act of Congress of 1912; boundaries determined in 1914; sovereignty disputed by U.S. and Panama in 1926; ceased to exist as a formal political entity [on] October 1, 1979, but remained under effective control of the U.S. through 1999 for administration of the Panama Canal.

Territoire de l'Amérique centrale situé de part et d'autre du canal interocéanique de Panama et cédé par la République de Panama aux États-Unis en 1903. C'est une bande de terre, large d'environ 8 km sur chaque rive, couvrant 1670 km², revenu depuis 1979, sous souveraineté panaméenne.
